Ken Gullette-mechanics in Pao Quan
Another good one. Notice when he does the Fa Jin “shake” as he’s demonstrating how much he looks like Chen Xiaowang (whom I believe is one of his teachers).

Today is my lucky day apparently. Here’s another excellent explanation of the mechanics of Peng (aka ward off) from Taijiquan works, which is the root of whole body power in all 3 of the Neijiaquan styles

I’m not to the whole body power stage yet in any of the 3 styles, but I have spent some time working on it in TJQ, and the couple times I did it (somewhat)right were on Push techniques sort of like this. This isn’t glamorous to watch for those not in the know, but the is the foundation for the more advanced techniques that make it look like you have super powers. I know I have lineage connections to Wang Shu Jin via Xingyiquan but I honestly don’t know about via BGZ becasue, well, I’m a n00b. So I can’t even tell you if this is right or not. So, something to watch all the same.

This is from Cheng style BGZ, which the style I (nominally)practice is a relative of. Something to notice about these apps: notice the guy on the right throws up a defense to the head shot thats coming his way and that gets incorporated into his untimely demise. This is one of the things about BGZ that really impresses me. In my chess playing days, I remember working my butt off to get my fundamentals down and play a solid, sensible, fundamentally sound game only to com eup against more advanced players who by their opening could force you into a pattern that while still fundamentally sound directs you right into the path of their plan. So its like you do everything right (as it appears) and still lose pieces. Same deal here. The worst thing you can do vs a BGZ fighter is to defend the first shot and sometimes the second, as now you have just opened yourself up to a whole new beating and have just given him the chance to practice his attacking from odd angles/locations.

Props to dave of Formosa Neijia for this one. These are his words: “The guy in this clip that Henry Wong is throwing down with his qi is aBJJ/MMA fighter here in Taiwan that goes by the name Miltown Kid. Iknow him personally. Here’s his BJJ

Quite an example of how fixing the tendons allows whole body power with barely any detectable movement.

So there’s an argument that I hear a lot for the way that TCM in the 21st century treats its patients (which is usually used to well, I don’t want to say excuse…more like account for everything from Qing Dynasty methods to antibiotics and Western diagnostics) which is that modern patients are subject to pathogens and pathologies that simply did not exist in the time of the great Han doctors and therefore the old methods are not effective in the way they were originally presented anymore.
The counter argument is something like “man has two arms, two legs, six Zang, and six Fu, how could he be different now?”
So let’s hear it people.

So, we are now three days removed from said XYQ workout and I find myself in the midst of a CFIDS flareup, which does not make me particularly cheery. Now let me start by saying that Matt in his infinite wisdom neglected to mention the need for Qi Shi Qi Fa practice post workout so that may have more than a little to do with all this. However, because of this flare-up I am no closer to knowing whether the intense burning I’ve had in my skin since then is Guo Yun Shen’s Fire Work, is Deficient Heat, or is some other Gu Syndrome related symptom I’ve yet to identify. Either way, it sucks. I haven’t been able to do much other than sleep or just lay still, my stomach is about 4 times its normal size, and my Shen is more than a little disturbed. It’s unlikely that this is a training effect. Best guess? My microscopic passengers (macroscopic if you take into account C.S. Lewis’ ideas about “Macrobes” and “Eldila” vs the ancient explanation behind parasitism) are still with me and are still a factor. Next formula that we are going to try is Da Huang Zhe Zhong Wan. Look up the ingredients and get nauseous.
